Off-Grid Solar

We are working to mitigate climate change by reducing CO2 emissions using individual solar systems in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, where as much as 85% of people do not have electricity and are forced to burn fossil fuels for light. This devastates the environment and particularly harms women and children’s health.

  • More than 4M people per year people die due to respiratory problems from burning fossil fuels – this is higher than malaria, AIDS, and cholera combined.
  • Compared to burning kerosene, solar lighting results in improved health, longer business and educational hours, improved safety and quality of life and deep environmental impact.
  • Demand for off-grid solar is growing at 55% per year, with the credit needs of off grid solar providers estimated by Bloomberg New Energy Finance at $3 billion annually by 2020.

Financial Access

Solar Products are most affordable when provided on an installment basis. We are also working with financial companies that provide financial access through innovative channels like digital finance.

  • Close to 2 billion people in the world do not have access to finance and more than 50% of adults in the poorest households are unbanked.
  • Access to finance has important benefits including helping households save, empowering women, increasing productive investment and consumption, raising productivity and incomes, and increasing expenditures on preventive health.

Solar lamps are healthier, give off brighter light, and improve educational outcomes. One study found that when a family acquires a solar light, children increased their study time on average from 1.7 to 3.2 hours each night.
