Could you share your personal journey in becoming an entrepreneur and what inspired you to pursue your current business?

Since my father is a professor of off-grid solar energy, it was always clear to me that not everyone had an electric socket at home and that energy needs to be generated somewhere. Back in 2011, when I started Fosera, I was still studying at university. The prices for solar panels had dropped significantly, LEDs became an affordable mass product and there was a lot of movement in battery research which made it possible to build a high-quality, long-lasting but still affordable solar home system.

How has your background and life experiences influenced the mission and values of your company, and the impact you aim to make in the world?

During my studies, I also had courses in Marketing. I found it very frustrating that a lot of tools taught there are aiming to sell people things they actually don’t need. With Fosera, we’re delivering high-quality solar home systems to people without access to energy and helping them transform their lives.

What are some of the achievements or milestones in your business journey so far? Can you share an example of a project or initiative that you’re most proud of?

We have grown from a tiny little (and very unprofessional) student start-up to a company with over 100 employees worldwide. Apart from our headquarters in Ulm, we have established our own factory in Thailand and an assembly line in Ethiopia. We have helped more than 3 million people get access to clean, affordable, and renewable energy.

Can you describe the challenges you faced during your entrepreneurial journey? Did you encounter any specific gender-specific challenges? How did you overcome them?

Starting a company always means overcoming challenges. Luckily, you’re never alone, and together with your colleagues, investors, or business partners, you find a solution and way forward.

What are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned as an entrepreneur that you would like to pass on to others considering a similar path?

It will be tough. There will be mistakes made. But don’t be afraid of making mistakes as it will help you grow.

Looking ahead, what are your aspirations and goals for the future and how do you plan to continue making a difference through your work?

With our amazing team at Fosera, we will continue to build solar home systems to achieve reliable, affordable, and clean access to energy.
